Background:
Ayeyarwaddy Region is situated in southern part of Myanmar comprising 6 districts in which 26 townships are included. The region has an area of 13,566 square miles ( 35,140 KM square) and the population is over 6.5 million, making it the most populous of Myanmar states and regions. The population density is 466/sq miles (180 /km square). In Ayeyarwaddy Region, two ethnic nationalities such as Bamar and Karen form the majority of the population, with a small minority of Rakhaing in the western coastal regions. The majority of the people are Buddhists, with small minority of Christians and Muslims. Pathein is the principal city and capital. It consists of 26 townships and 29 cities. In the townships there are 219 wards, 1912 village groups and 11651 villages. Social sectors such as Education, Health and Livelihoods have suffered much of slow and underdevelopment for 50 years under military regime. Karen Language and culture was severely oppressed after nationalization and confiscation of private schools in 1965. Consequently many younger generations born after 1965 have been deprived of learning their mother tongue  in schools and institutions and have lost capability of reading and writing Karen Language. Many people in Karen villages in Delta  do not know how to speak Karen anymore. The region was severely hit by Cyclone Nargis in 2008 and remaining to be prone to natural disasters. However Ayeyarwaddy Region has a lot of potential of human resources, rich of paddy lands and fish farming and forestry  along the bay of Bangle. If only the rich human and natural resources are systematically well supported and accompanied technically and materially, the region of Ayeyarwddy can promise of much hope of prosperity and development.
